It was a cloudy afternoon that day; no one expected the heavy downpour that came a few hours later. He was one of them.
He was walking, yes, walking — he is a health-conscious boy, after all — down the street when he felt the strong droplets of rain hitting every part of his body. He ran as fast as he could, until he found a place big enough to shield him from the rain and warm enough to keep him from the cold.
The first place he found was a little, yet cozy café, further down the street. He always knew that there was a café down here, but he didn’t really remember it until he actually passed by it.
He opened the sliding door and he was greeted by a warm gush of air, smelling of roast coffee beans and sweet strawberry cupcakes. He entered the comfy haven and sat at the nearest available seat. He watched the people around — most of them as drenched as he was, warming themselves up with a few cups of coffee.
He then realized that maybe he should order a cup himself. He stood up, walked slowly towards the counter when he noticed that one of the waitresses was eyeing someone at the corner of the already crowded café.
He glanced a little to his left, and found a girl — oh, wait — a man wearing a rather tousled ponytail sitting at the farthest, most secluded couch in the room, crouched over his faithful little MacBook as he typed furiously.
He chuckled to himself and went on with his own business, just like the ponytailed man in the corner. He went up to corner and ordered a cup of Mocha Latte.
He walked back to his seat, before realizing his seat was taken. The only seat available left was the one right across the frantically typing man. Realizing that there isn’t anything he could do, he strode towards the other.
“Uhm, hi.”
The other man barely looked at him.
“Yeah?”
“I was wondering if I could take the seat across yours.”
“Yeah, whatever.”
“I was wondering if I could get your name, please.”
“Heechul. Whatever you’ll need that for. I know I’m pretty, and I’m sure you’d want me to pose for some sort of pornographic material, but I’m sorry to tell you, I’m a man.”
At this, he chuckled, thus making Heechul look up.
“I’ve figured that much out already.”
Heechul glared at him, and bitchily snapped, “Aren’t you giving me your name, Mr. Know-it-All?”
“Hankyung.”
“K.”
Heechul continued with his furious MacBook tapping, and Hankyung continued with his calm Mocha Latte sipping. A comfortable silence settled between them for a few minutes, until Heechul broke it.
“Whachastarin’at?”
“I was just thinking… What are you typing about?”
“None of your concern.”
“I might be able to help.” Hankyung smiled. If Heechul’s glare can bitchslap one a thousand times, Hankyung’s smile can bitchslap Heechul’s glare a million times.
At this, Heechul wanted to let out a sigh of resignation, but, of course, he was the almighty Kim Heechul. There’s nothing anyone can do to make him sigh.
“I’m blogging. Do you know what blogging is? Of course, you do. I need to blog about a decent indie band. I’ve been looking up indie bands from around here but I can’t find one that suits my high class taste. How can you help, Mr. Know-it-All?”
“I know a good indie band. They have a gig two nights from now. Want to come with me?”
“That better be good.”
Hankyung flashed another sweet smile and nodded. Heechul grumbled and continued tapping at his MacBook.
Feeling the need to go home a few moments later, Hankyung said goodbye.
“See you here, two nights from now.” He left the café with a smile on his face.
*-*
Hankyung found himself sitting at the same spot two nights later, drinking another cup of Mocha Latte. He glanced at his watch every so often, as he patiently yet worriedly waited for Heechul, the androgynous blogger.
He dashed to get here from workagain, fearing that he might upset his new found friend, if he could call him that. Then again, may he should reconsider calling him a friend, because he might as well call him a happy crush — then he’d have to admit that he was visiting this café (that never existed in his life before) every day since that rainy night, hoping to meet him again.
He was amused, that was the word he’d use to describe what he feels when in the other’s company; yet even so, it made him wonder why he would move mountains to help him.
He, normally, would want to watch this band alone; he would decline friends’ offers of even free tickets to their gigs—just so that he could watch alone and ponder. Their music was peaceful haven to his mind.
Yet, here he was, taking someone else to his peaceful haven. Inviting, he corrected himself. Speaking of someone else, here he was.
“Yo.”
Hankyung looked up and found his new found friend staring down at him. He had his wavy, shoulder-length hair down, and he was wearing a black shirt under a red jacket and a pair of skinny jeans. He was also wearing a praiseworthy pair ofawesomeness in his feet rubber shoes.
Overall, Heechul looked way hipper compared to himself—he only had a simple white shirt and jeans on, plus a very simple pair of rubber shoes. He looked like a personal assistant of a star.
“Hey.”
“Where are we to?”
Hankyung smirked and Heechul’s heart skipped a beat.
“Somewhere.”
*-*
Of course, the gig ended well, and Hankyung happily noted that Heechul was smiling gleefully — obviously, he enjoyed the band. That’s good to know, Hankyung told himself. Heechul was noting a few things in his iPhone, the rich bastard when his eyes lit up.
“Where else should I go?”
Hankyung started to point out some really good bars where indie bands perform, but Heechul cut him off.
“No, I meant what province should I visit next.”
Hankyung froze. Oh, right. He forgot. He pretended not feel hurt as he suggested some places to Heechul, who dismissively said, “I have to go and write now. Thanks for tonight.”
“Sure.”
Off went the excited Heechul, leaving behind a very sad Hankyung.
*-*
Hankyung sat in front of his desktop computer, browsing through his emails. He was bored as he could be—well, he missed Heechul. He wanted to know more of the other; he was like drugs to Hankyung.
Their lives were as different as the way they dressed—Heechul was a flamboyant man while he was a simple man. Yet, even if a saying goes birds of the same feather, flock together, he knew that he was attracted to Heechul.
Maybe opposites attract applies to me, he grimly thought.
It has been five days since he saw Heechul; he’d have to admit that when the other left, his life was duller than before. He wanted a life as colorful as Heechul’s — not as monochromatic as his own.
He was brought back to life when he found an email about his favorite indie band—he was subscribed to their emailing list. They updated people about write ups about them, gigs, awards they receive — everything.
Hankyung giddily opened it; he felt like there was something good about this email. He found that it was a new write up about his dearest indie band, so he went and read it.
It was pretty short, but, the last few lines made him smile.
Even if it is work time, he logged out of his work email, and logged on to his private email. He composed an email and hit csend.
Then, he thought.
Maybe, I’m not the only one missing someone else.
It would seem that what he thought was true. That’s because he found a reply immediately. He’d like to think it wasn’t Heechul’s, but it was.
Miss you. See you later at the café?
Yes. He typed. Without hesitation, he added, I miss you too.

To the person who helped me find this band, I guess I forgot to give you my number. Email me at thebeautifulandrogynousblogger_kimheechul@gmail.com. Prove to me that you are you. *wink*
