A long time ago, very far into the Zhou family tree, came a man named Zhou Chun. Unlike all the other Zhous of the time, he was smart, sociable, quick-minded, and wise. He could find an answer with the snap of his fingers. He could learn new languages in a manner of weeks. Far too intelligent for their home town, he was taken by the emperor to be his advisor and answer any questions he had. Life’s mysteries were solved by Chun’s great mind, and in all of China, he was said to be the smartest man at the time.

Unfortunately, he died at the age of forty two. With no wife or children, the next descendant from the Zhou family, Zhou Li, Chun’s nephew, wasn’t so smart. The emperor, thinking that the Zhou family would have another smart child like Chun, housed the family and gave them high levels of respect, hoping that one of the Zhou children would be as smart as Chun had been. This never happened. They kept on having dumber ones, the shining star from all the rough never found.

The emperor’s descendants grew furious—too tired of waiting for something that wouldn’t come. And so, when the emperor had a knife to his throat, he pointed at the Zhou family, telling the Korean army that had taken over that they could keep the whole family as their slaves for his freedom. The General agreed—they were long-legged and looked as if they could work well. And so, the Zhou family moved from China in the emperor’s house to Korea, working with barely anything in return.

And the family prayed. They prayed for a man like Zhou Chun to come and get them out of there.

One day, a young Zhou named Ai gave birth to a squealing baby named Zhou Mi. Most of the other slaves wanted to kill the young boy, because unlike the others, Mi’s father was the owner, a Korean. But the eldest of them, one that grew up with stories of Zhou Chun, said no, let him live. Not wanting him to have the family name, they gave him a Korean name: Joomyuk.

The slave owner’s wife found out about Joomyuk and took him into her care, not letting him work with the other slaves. Joomyuk was forced to forget about his mother, and slowly did, learning Korean and their ways, growing up as a Korean boy.

“I want to leave. Leave for China,” Joomyuk announced one day. The mother cried, but before Joomyuk was to leave, she showed him the family that had been his so long ago. Ai, still in love with her son, gave him a small amulet, recounting him the story of Zhou Chun, his riches, his power. “Some say that before he died, Zhou Chun was abducted by Mongolian thieves. They didn’t know of his power, of course, and he beat them—but a drop of his blood landed in a pool of water. The gods, because they loved him and his wisdom, blessed the pool. If you are to drink from this pool, you will be given eternal life. Please find it and get us out of this, Mi.”

Joomyuk left the house one cold winter’s day. It was the sixth of April 1960 when he finally met Cho Kyuhyun.

He had been traveling all over, trying to find the rumored pool in which his mother had taught him of months before. It wasn’t like he wasn’t putting any effort into it, but the fact was, he wasn’t. He found himself hanging out with a man named Han Geng, who he practiced his long-forgotten language of Mandarin with. He found himself staying in China longer than he should be, not searching for the thing that had him sleepless for the first few nights. A letter from the slave owner’s wife reminding him of his task.

“My name is Cho Kyuhyun—or Kuixian. I heard you wanted my help with Zhou Chun,” the Korean said in perfect Mandarin. Joomyuk nodded and smiled, his chin hitting his chest constantly. Kyuhyun smiled. “Well, I can give you some papers about him. But unfortunately, not that many is recorded about him.”

“I don’t care—I’m looking for a pool of his.” Joomyuk watched as his eyes grew wide and his lips parted. Kyuhyun shook his head, pushing the glasses up further on his nose. “It exists,” Joomyuk continued, and for a brief moment, their eyes met, a brief silence shared. Kyuhyun sighed, ruffling his brown hair.

“I’ve been looking for it since I heard about Zhou Chun. Fine, I’ll help you look for it.” Kyuhyun stood up, extending his arm and they shook hands. Zhou Mi smiled.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, then?” Kyuhyun nodded.

Zhou Mi pressed himself again a tree, trying to breathe as Kyuhyun sipped on some water. “Can we rest, please? It’s been so long since we rested…”

Kyuhyun rolled his eyes, before finishing the water bottle. “Crap, the bottle’s done. We’ll need to find a river or something—I expect to be out here for a few more hours.” He grabbed Zhou Mi’s collar and pushed him forwards. “Plus, it’s the 1960s—who would want to even talk to us if anyone ran into us?” Joomyuk rolled his eyes.

Zhou Mi fixed his collar and followed him throughout the trees that stretched over his head, making him stare into the clouds and watch the flying birds. The clouds created a beautiful backdrop to the wings of the birds that flew past. Kyuhyun pushed him out of the daydream, smiling up at him before fixing his hat and walking ahead of him, his brown suit mixing in with the trunks of the trees. Joomyuk smiled.

“What are we gonna do if we find it? I mean, if we find the pool,” Zhou Mi asked, keeping in step with Kyuhyun as they walked up to a small creek in the forest. Kyuhyun shrugged, and that was the end of it.

Joomyuk squatted down, closing his eyes and breathing the scent. “I like these walks. We should do them more often, Kuixian,” he said, opening one eye and smirking at Kyuhyun, who rolled his eyes. He looked around, digging his hands into the pocket of his dress pants, his hiking boots digging into the soil. He slowly walked off, leaving Joomyuk to relax for a while.

“Zhou Mi!” He stood up, following the voice, and gasped when he saw Kyuhyun there, bent over a pool near a tree that looked to be over three thousand years old. Joomyuk ran up beside him, putting his hand into the water and pulling it out, his fingertips leaking droplets of water. He sucked on his fingers, letting the water run down his arm and into his dress shirt. He looked up, his eyes catching Kyuhyun’s as they stared for a few minutes.

“Drink some,” he tells Kyuhyun, cupping his hands and handing some of the water to Kyuhyun. The younger’s eyes grow, but he slowly drinks from Zhou Mi’s fingers. He pulls away, and Mi swears his eyes are brighter than they were before. They stare at each other for a while, but finally they smile.

Zhou Mi places his hands on his hips, glaring at Kyuhyun. “You said you would be back soon! What were you doing?” he asks. Kyuhyun smirks, walking up to Zhou Mi and hugging him, placing a chaste kiss on his lips. Zhou Mi rolls his eyes, trying to look away, but instead, Kyuhyun kisses his neck, laughing when Zhou Mi hits his side.

“How is my immortal princess?”

“Prince.”

“Yeah, prince. It sounded like you were worried—I wasn’t seducing a mortal if that’s what you think. Just protecting our pool.”

“No one is going to steal it or anything—calm down Kuixian,” Zhou Mi said, kissing him on the cheek and walking off.

“I know how you could calm me down~” Kyuhyun says, following Zhou Mi with a sly smile on his face.

“Start cooking dinner first.”
